Almost always. The indoor side can be slim ducted so only a grille shows, and the outdoor unit can go on a side or rear elevation, in a screened enclosure or behind planting, as long as it keeps clear airflow of roughly 300mm behind and a metre in front. Boxing a condenser in tightly to hide it is the one thing that genuinely hurts performance, so we design the screen rather than bolting one on afterwards.
It can, but the outdoor unit caps the total. Five 2.5kW indoor units on a 10kW condenser gives you 10kW shared between them when everything runs at once, not 12.5kW. In a house where all five rooms are occupied on the same hot evening that matters, so we size the condenser against how you actually use the house rather than the theoretical maximum.
