Awkward access, shared structures and tight fitting windows. Slim ducted units hidden above a false ceiling usually beat a wall unit visually and satisfy the landlord.

Often yes, but it needs listed building consent because permitted development rights do not apply. What usually gets approved is a condenser in a rear courtyard or a discreet position not visible from a public highway, with indoor units chosen to avoid drilling through historic fabric where possible. We put the application together and talk to the conservation officer before you commit to anything.
Permitted development still applies but with an extra restriction: the outdoor unit must not be nearer to any highway bounding the property than any part of the building. It also has to meet the MCS 020 noise standard of 42 dB(A) at the nearest neighbouring habitable room window, and it cannot be on a pitched roof.
